For twenty-seven years, EMA has focused on promoting market-based solutions for environmental challenges through sound public policy, industry best practices, effective education and training, and member networking.
EMA represents a diverse membership including large utilities, emissions brokers and traders, exchanges, law firms, project developers, consultants, academics, NGOs and government agencies.
1996 - EMA FOUNDED
On November 4, 1996 EMA was formally registered as The Emissions Marketing Association.
1997 - EMA's First Meeting HELD
The first of many Annual meetings was held in Phoenix, Arizona to bring awareness to emissions trading.
1999 - EMISSIONS TRADING HANDBOOK
ETEI (Emissions Trading Education Initiative), a partnership with The Environmental Defense Fund, released The Emissions Trading Handbook.
2002 - ET 101 Launched
In 2002, in partnership with The US EPA, EMA launched "ET 101" to educate people about cap-and-trade
2004 - EMA Gets a Name Change
In 2004, The EMA Board voted to change its name to The Environmental Markets Association to reflect the growig diversity in environmental markets.
2007 - Master REC agreement Created
Master Renewable Energy Certificate Purchase and Sale Agreement was developed with ABA and ACORE.
2013 - Best Practices Principles for Market-Based Solutions
EMA releases best practice principles to support the utilization of markets to achieve environmental policy goals.
2018 - REC Market Best PRactices PRinciple
EMA agrees upon and publishes its REC Market Best Practices Principles.
2021 - EMA 2.0 Launch
Leveraging the strengths from its history, EMA moves into its next quarter century with a bold and innovative strategy.
